SECTION IX
TECHNOLOGY
Technology has always had a hand in the way people travel, whether it was the evolution
from horse carriages to train cars or to automobiles and airplanes. But technology in
travel for the past half-century has been more about the way travel is sold and booked
than about how travel is conducted. Massive technology changes in those arenas have been
almost as revolutionary as the wheel — a virtual reinvention of process. Travel technology’s
evolution since Travel Weekly began publishing in 1958 started with the development and
perfection of data management through iconic companies like IBM as it developed room-size
mainframe computers.
