CALIFORNIA
The Golden State
Ocean, mountain and desert are California’s defining features. The
Coastal Mountain Range extends north from Santa Barbara and into
Oregon. In the far northeast, the Cascades extend into neighboring
Oregon, and the rugged Sierra Nevada’s jagged peaks tower over the
eastern third of the state. The Peninsular Ranges extend from Los
Angeles south into Mexico’s Baja peninsula, while the east-west
Transverse Ranges separate much of Southern California from the
rest of the state. The southeastern quarter of the state is one vast
semiarid desert fringed by valleys and mountains. On the eastern border, Death Valley boasts an astonishing array of geological formations.
Major Tourism Corridors
Within these dramatic geographical features, are several major tourist
destinations: San Francisco serves visitors the iconic Golden Gate Bridge
trolley cars and a rich history that combines with modern charm, renowned
restaurants, high-tech jobs and a trace of 1960s-style social revolution.
Foodies can follow their bliss into the surrounding Napa Valley wine country.

From Santa Cruz—the original surf city—on the north end of Monterey
Bay, to the cozy village of Carmel on the south end, each of the bay’s
oceanside enclaves has its own personality.
In the southern part of the state, Los Angeles offers beaches, sun, shopping and the Hollywood Hills. Edgier than it’s upstate neighbor, L.A. offers
eclectic neighborhoods and fast-paced vacations. Major sights include
Hollywood, Beverly Hills/Rodeo Drive, Disneyland, Universal Studios and
Venice Beach.
San Diego offers a slower-pace atmosphere in Southern California,
famous for its beaches and growing number of quality restaurants. Its
renowned Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo are must sees.
Carmel was developed in the early 20th century by artists, poets and
visionaries. The town itself slopes downhill to Carmel Beach City Park and
Carmel River Beach. Carmel Valley Road leads through the eponymous
valley where deluxe spa hotels and ranches enjoy bucolic settings. Tourism highlights include Carmel Mission, Tor House, 17-Mile Drive (through
Pebble Beach Golf Course) and Carmel-by-the-Sea Village. Pacific Repertory Theatre, Forest Theatre and several live jazz venues are worthy visits.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car has more than 650 locations in California.
