Solomon’s Pillars, Timna Valley Park
NATURAL WONDER:
Timna Valley Park is at once a landmark of historical innovation and a testament to
the powerful forces of nature that shaped this otherworldly landscape. As early as
5,000 BC, Egyptians mined the area for copper and constructed a shrine to Hathor,
goddess of mining, at the foot of the 165-feet high sandstone columns known as
Solomon’s Pillars. These columns, as well as other natural phenomena in the area
including the Mushroom Rock and the dramatic arches that form enormous portals
in the towering cliffs, were formed over centuries by wind and water erosion.
