Strategies for novices, veterans alike at Travel Weekly show
By Nadine Godwin
Accepted wisdom tells us that every successful travel agency owner needs a business strategy, but situations and goals vary.
That’s why delegates to Travel Weekly’s
Cruise World and Home Based Agent Show,
set for June 18 to 20 in Seattle, will be of-
fered three concurrent sessions on strategic
planning, each meant for agents at different
points in their business development.
He promises to reveal six crucial behavioral areas that drive superior achievement
at work. In the process, he will offer more
than 50 practical tips for success. The session is meant to help the seasoned travel
agent be more successful in his or her private as well as professional life.
Finally, there comes the time when some
entrepreneurs are ready to sell or at least assess the marketability of their businesses.
Mark Pestronk, travel industry lawyer
and Travel Weekly’s Legal Briefs columnist,
will take on the salient questions for this
group of retailers in the third of the concurrent sessions, titled “Selling Your Book
of Business: How to Evaluate It, How to Do
It and How to Protect Yourself.”

Pestronk will describe how to value a
travel agency’s business, how to structure a
sale and how to be legally protected when
making the big move. Other topics will
include finding the buyer, knowing what
to expect from the buyer and protecting
against buyer default.
For some agents, planning for the future might mean passing the business on
to a family member. Pestronk will look at
the unique aspects of that option, too. He
also plans to provide delegates with sample
forms and checklists.
Conference preregistration for agents is
